When you have a trailer attached to the back of your car or truck, the question is always the same:

Should the shift position be in OD or D?
It is important to know that the transmission reacts to the demands of the motor. Powertrain control modules continually analyze motor data. Therefore, if the motor is forcing more than normal, the transmission’s speed changes will be slower or the kick-down will be activated.

When your vehicle is overloaded, you should leave the shift in D position and put it in OD when the speed of the vehicle is stabilized. If you don’t, you will notice a come and go sensation which means the transmission is going back and forth from OD (overdrive) to D. Over time this will damage the transmission. However, when going down a hill, you can put the shift position from OD to D.

This way you will be using the motor’s power to slow you down, a little like a Jake brake.

Before you start towing, it is also very important to check the condition of the transmission. Emptying the transmission oil and changing the filter along with the addition of an auxiliary cooler will protect your transmission and ensure worry-free trips.

Don’t hesitate to communicate with our personnel. Our experienced technicians can advise you on preventive maintenance for your transmission.
